Monkey Business

10:55 PM Wed, Jul 02, 2008 |

I have seen it all. I always think that in this business but as far as animals go I think I really have seen it all now. I am working on a series about pet sanctuaries and animal rescues. These places pride themselves on being what's known as "no-kill" facilities. Every animal they house can stay there indefinitely. I traveled to Nicholasville, KY to check out a couple of sanctuaries I found online. The first place is called Primate Rescue Center. They house about 50 chimps and monkeys. I have never seen anything like it. They are not open to the public and the centers director let us onto the property for an exclusive look at what goes on. A primate rescue in the middle of horse country! It was truly a site that you have to see to believe. And you will see it this month on WHAS 11 News. The second sanctuary I visited is called Wolf Run. They have lions and cougars on their property. I must admit - I was nervous on their property. My imagination was running wild. I kept asking myself 'what if a lion bursts through the cage?' Fortunately reality set in and I calmed down. I was safe. That was the closest I'd been to a lion. I was even closer than you are at the zoo. How do these places operate? Where do they get the animals from? Who regulates animal sanctuaries in Kentucky? Are the animals really better off? Interested? Stay tuned to WHAS 11 to see when the stories will air. I promise, you will be as amazed as I was.
