Hope everyone enjoyed the weekend, the "slow" time of year isn't so slow. Friday, I interviewed UofL track coach Ron Mann. He's been coaching for 28 years and now finally he's going to coach in the Olympics. He'll coach the middle distance runners in Beijing. Mann is a very friendly, warm guy. You can see why he makes such a successful coach. He leaves for China later this month, what a trip! I also got to talk with the one and only Tommie Smith. If you don't know the story of the 1968 Olympics I suggest you read up on it. I was lucky because the night before the interview HBO was running a documentary on the '68 games. It's called "Fists of Freedom" and really enlightened me. This is the 3rd year Smith has come to Louisville to help put on a youth track meet. I was glad to find out, he'll be going to China for the Olympics. He stood up for what he believed in and paid the price for it. I hope now 40 years later, he's able to take his rightful place in Olympic history. And I finished off the weekend at All-Star FanFest, definitely worth checking out if you are a baseball fan. I brought my 20-month-old son to see the mascot home run derby. I figured he'd get a kick out of seeing the big furry creates try and hit the ball out of the make-shift park. It was great to see all the kids get to sit along the foul lines right on the field as the mascots took their turns with trying to hit those wiffle ball homers. My son, Aaron was more interested in grabbing a few on the bats that were lying around. We'll have complete coverage the next three days from the Home Run Derby on Monday, and Wednesday's Triple-A All-Star game. |
