Ladies, this one is for you. A new law that is. In Indiana it's now the law that new moms must be given the time and place to pump at work. May not sound like a big deal, but let me tell you a story. Way back in the day when my kids were born, there was no such luxury. I wanted to breastfeed my kids because I believed it was a real benefit for them, I didn't need convincing. On maternity leave at home, it was a very natural thing, breastfeeding and pumping when I had to. Then I came back to work and wanted to continue breastfeeding, not exactly practical. There was no place to accomodate a new mom pumping, so I had to find one. Imagine the stall of my workplace restroom, with a very long extension cord to reach the nearest outlet. Now imagine other women walking into the restroom with the sounds of a droning pump. I would quickly yell out "pumping" so they wouldn't think anything else was going on in there! I brought a small cooler that I would put into the workplace refrigerator, I think I wrote on the outside "don't touch." I did this for awhile, but not for as long as I had hoped because it just wasn't practical. So ladies, this one is for you. I hope this new law in Indiana has you coming out of the stalls and into perhaps a nice office to do your pumping. Yes, I am pumped about the new law. I still think it's worth it to breastfeed and pump, so it only seems fitting that women should have the proper time and proper place to do it! |
