Anthem for Riley and Claudia

11:56 PM Tue, Jul 29, 2008 |

The anthem, or Offertory song at the joint funeral of four year old Riley Lawrence and five year old Claudia Wadlington, both killed by a hit and run driver near U of L last week, was composed for the funeral by Tom Bailey, Resurrection's music director. Here are the lyrics:

Song of Claudia and Riley

In the morning I watched a beautiful butterfly
as it fed on nectar of a vibrant deep violent blossoming bush.
It was unaware of its own beauty
as it fed itself in total innocence with sweet nectar.
And I marveled at the beauty,
of the butterfly and blossom.

In the afternoon I saw a beautiful gold finch
as it lit upon the longest branch of a slim, young, green-leafed tree.
It was unaware of its own beauty
as it disappeared into the bosom and safety of the tree.
And I marveled at the beauty,
beauty of the bird and tree.

In the evening I saw two gorgeous young girls
blissfully unaware of the pleasure they gave.
Then struck down and disappear into the bosom
Into the bosom and safety of the eternal,
And I marveled at the beauty,
of the innocence of children.

May we always respect their joy and beauty,
and their gifts to those who never knew them and who loved
and cared for them.
But also to those who never had,
to those who never knew such pleasure.

Ah! Such beautiful children. Ah! Our beautiful child.
Ah! Such innocent pleasure. Ah! Our innocent child.

A church spokeswoman says at Cave Hill cemetery, "an ensemble of Resurrection's Sudanese members sang, accompanied by drummers, a traditional hymn in Dinka."
