J'Town Shooting: Never Really Over

11:01 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008 |

The criminal case in the June, 2007 road rage shooting is essentially over, and the Pickerill family says they won't file a civil suit, so what is left in this case that has elicited such strong opinions from our viewers?

Most importantly, Darren Pickerill has been reduced to a "toddler" existence, his brain injuries rendering him unable to perform the most basic human tasks. Regardless of whatever level of responsibility he shares for what happened in the Stonybrook parking lot, he and his family are paying the dearest price, permanently.

That is not to underestimate what the Koenig family has been going through since that fateful day. From many accounts, they are a religious family who has been deeply affected by the incident and the intense attention paid to Richard Koenig's documented tempermental past.

I can only imagine the psychological implications of shooting someone.

From the beginning, I have done all I could to fairly represent what we know about this case. But, clearly, what Kentuckiana has been told the least about is the full picture of Richard Koenig.

Mr. Koenig, consider this an open invitation to let the public see you for who you truly are. Are there friends/colleagues who can represent you in an accurate light? Call me 582-7203, e-mail me (joe.arnold@whas11.com).

You deserve the opportunity to be heard.

Koenig, religious? He even had a confrontation with his parish priest. It was simply because he could not follow the rules the other parishiners followed. He thought he was exempt from entering the parking lot from the wrong direction until the priest met him before Mass one morning to set him straight.

What did Koenig do? Got mad and joined another parish. What a relief to the parishiners! The bully was gone!

Yes Mr. Koenig let's hear what you have to say ? Why didn't you make different choices that day ? What was your purpose for taking pictures ? Why did you wrestle a 16 year old to the ground and nearly run over a toddler ? Why do you find humor in the fact that Darren's life has changed forever? Do you feel any remorse for your actions? Where was your gun exactly ? Do you have it ready at all stop signs? Was it on safety even? You know self defense is when you have no escape from danger and you had many alternative choices especially in a running vehicle with your police knowledge and that is presuming a weapon was even brandished. You are suppose to be an example for our society and children please tell us why you chose not to use any of them instead opened fire injuring a man and endangering many others on that busy day! If you paint your name on the side of your car I'm sure everyone in Stonybrook will allow you to go first.
