What happened after the 6pm newscast in our coverage of the Shelby County barn fire which killed seven horses... It was a mystery most of the day. Who was the passing motorcyclist who had noticed a barn was on fire and banged on the walls to rescue the woman who lived inside? Her son called that mystery man a hero and the Shelby County Fire Chief wanted to talk to him. But no one knew who he was. Then, in the late afternoon while preparing my 5pm and 6pm stories for WHAS11 News, I noticed a motorcyclist stop on the property. I approached him saying, "You aren't by chance the motorcyclist who was here this morning, are you?" "Yes, I am." His name is Trevor Vires. My question paid off as he explained in an exclusive interview how he had called 911 and partially entered the inferno to keep Joan Chaney from going back in to rescue the horses. He came back to the scene to make sure she was okay. Despite burns to her arms, legs and feet, she is. "Did you know they are crediting you with saving her life?" I asked. "No. No, I didn't," Vires said, almost embarrassed by the suggestion. I got Vires in touch with Shelby Fire Chief Bobby Cowherd and told Chaney's family who he was. But the most touching development wasn't until after my 6pm story. I noticed Joe Chaney had returned to the scene. I called Vires to ask if he could come to the scene and meet Chaney. He then waved to me through the smoke. He had also returned. I approached Chaney telling him there was someone I wanted him to meet. Photojournalist Ron Johnson's camera rolled as I walked Chaney through the smoke and introduced him to Vires. This is the motorcyclist. Chaney struggled for words as tears welled and emotion caught in his throat. Finally, he simply reached out to Vires, hugging and thanking him. What a moment. The men's wives stood about twenty feet away, crying. Vires' son was closer. "Your Dad is a hero," Chaney said. |
