Kentuckiana Cares

8:27 AM Tue, Jul 03, 2007 |

There are three recent examples in our area that people are not selfish, heartless and jaded, not even news people.

As the guy people around town often call “the news guy” I am in daily conversations with our viewers about the news of the day. They want to know the “real story” about the bomb threat at a downtown hospital. They’re curious why Churchill Downs gets an exemption from the smoking ban. And yes, they want to know if it’s going to rain this coming weekend.

But these aren’t the stories that pull on the heartstrings of this community.

First off let me be clear, “the real story” is the one we report. If there were sensational circumstances that we could confirm why in the world wouldn’t we report them? We are paid to tell interesting stories. If we tell the best stories, and more people watch WHAS 11 News eventually we may be paid more. As for the Churchill Downs exemption and rain this weekend, I have no idea!

What I do know is that a whole lot of our viewers have been touched by three stories recently that have broken their hearts. When Floyd County Sheriff Deputy Frank Denzinger was killed in the line of duty all of Kentuckiana mourned. When teenager Katie Lasitter suffered a horrible injury at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom while riding a ride people all around the world sent words of encouragement. And when a four-year-old little boy Cesar (Ivan) Cano went missing total strangers put their busy schedules aside and went to work to help to find him.

With these stories the people that approach me on the street want to know more than just what happened, they want to know how they can help. It is times like this that I’m proud to be a part of this community, and I’m glad that I have an answer.

I actually thought the local news channels have done a pretty good job covering this story and it seems to me that you've all made an effort to tell the information and pieces that the family wanted "out there". I wish you could tell us that the police have a suspect. I have cried myself to sleep every night since this little baby was found murdered and am grief-stricken over this child that I've never met. What bothers me about the news coverage is that so much air time is being given to other stories. For me, this is the only news of any consequence in Louisville right now. Smoking bans, what congress is doing, what President Bush is doing, all those things are insignificant and don't matter one bit in light of this tragedy.

What I need for you to answer for me is why was there no amber alert issued for this child? I cannot understand that for the life of me.We are talking about a four year old child.Did the police think he got on a bus and went riding around the city? Why did it take so long for this to become a "TOP STORY" on your newscast? I am so disappointed in the news organization in this city as well as the police department.I have seen where most news will chase a story down, yet this child did not warrant an amber alert or top story.I honestly believe had this child been white,an amber alert would have been issued within 24 hours and it would have been your top and leading story.I have been a resident of this city for a long time and I have always been fair about giving your news organization look first as far as the news would go.My disappointment in all of you(WLKY32,WAVE3,WDRB41)is profound.Maybe my belief was, that one of the reporters would have been on LMPD a lot more(demanding an explaination on an amber alert)than they were.I see now we have to make sure our children don't go missing, because based on the color of their skin, the police and the news stations sure don't give a damn.

Missing 4 year old

How can the community help?

Give some ideas.
Maybe have anyone near a wooded area should check their property or the areas around them. If there is a group gathering to help look for the little boy maybe annoucing it will bring even more volunteers. Also are there any statistics on the usual distance a missing child is found from home? Maybe it would help to give perimeters for people.

A lot of people don't know how to help, they need guidance and as Always We need to pray.
