Bicycling for fun and profit

In which Your Humble Narrator discovers that two wheels are occasionally better than four

More fun than profit. Much more, actually. But with gas prices the way they are right now, money does factor in.

Every year during “Bike to Work Week,” I try to, well, bike to work. It's fun, it's different, it's bracing to begin the day with a little exercise, it's nice basking in the admiration of certain coworkers who seemed to think I was biking into Louisville from West Virginia or someplace far away..

But why just bike to work during “Bike to Work Week?” That’s too obvious. I decided that as long as the weather holds up, and provided I haven’t overslpet, tee hee, I will ride my bike in to the office. (Famous last words.)

I am very fortunate in that I work in an industry that does not require me to dress all fancy-like, so I don’t have to worry about messing up a suit and tie, and better still, I live less than three miles from WHAS11.com HQ, so it’s not as if I have to devote much time or energy to biking in to work, so even if I did have to wear a suit and tie, I wouldn’t be too terribly hot and sweaty upon arrival.

Interestingly -- and thankfully -- I have yet to encounter any obnoxious drivers, either pedaling to or from work. Everybody so far has respected my space on the road. More interestingly, I regularly encounter extremely obnoxious motorists while bicycling through city parks – you know, a place where one should logically expect to encounter people riding bicycles, but then, people who choose to experience nature and the great outdoors by driving through a public park at 35 miles per hour with their windows rolled up (except to swear at the occasional cyclist) probably aren’t the brightest stars in the human constellation to begin with.

(Fun fact: If you happen to catch up to the motorist who just cursed at you or threw a soda pop can at you and you happen to smack his vehicle with your fist? He gets real polite, real quick.)

The way I see it, unless someone discovers vast deposits of crude oil underneath Nebraska, more and more people will get on the cycling tip, and I get to say I was there first.

Until a TARC bus grinds me into the pavement.

Bikes on busy roads is a problem. Why anybody would ride a bike down Hurstbourne Lane is beyond me. People need to get where they are going, and that's very hard to do on Hurstbourne Lane with a bike in front of you. It's ridiculous. It would be much safer for everyone if they were on the sidewalk.
