So often as a journalist I have the great pleasure of attending events that we can never quite do justice on our evening newscast. Often we don't have the time to take you behind the scenes and help you see the moments that make the event so special. For 14 years, Wilt Elementary has celebrated Valentine's Day in a way that will make your heart soar. For many of those years I've been asked to attend the event and act as MC as well as represent the WHAS Crusade for Children. The moment I walk in the doors of the school that's nestled next to McNeely Lake Park I can feel the excitement. The boys are walking around in their "Sunday Best." A staff member is answering the intercom and opening doors for the parents arriving to see their children. This event raises funds for the WHAS Crusade for Children but over the years I've noticed it does a whole lot more. The children are excited and proud. Many parents are there in the middle of the day to witness and cheer the achievement. Each class has done whatever the students choose to raise money for the crusade. Each class selects a boy and girl to represent them on Valentine's day when the money is donated. The cafeteria is turned into a hall of hearts and roses. At the back of the room an archway frames the class couple as they walk into the room on a red paper runner. Teachers announce their names and the whole place erupts in applause. While only two students from each class are on stage it always seems to me that every child feels the warmth and approval from fellow classmates, teachers and parents. 2 CommentsLeave a comment |

What a great way to support the Crusade for Children! The Wilt children's faces beam with pride for their accomplishments. I am especially impressed by the young gentlemen who stopped to allow their escorts to go ahead of them once they reached the stage area. That is a life lesson!
Your comments and the video are wonderful. Thank you for celebrating the accomplishments of the Wilt Elementary School community as they work to raise money for the Crusade for Children. Melissa Swan's presence at our Crusade Valentine Coronation has become a much anticipated part of this annual event. Tne one question that folks repeatedly ask during the days prior to Valentine's Day is, "Will Melissa Swan be here?" Congratulations to our students, their families and friends, community members, and staff for showing how much they care about children and families in need through this annual contribution to the Crusade for Children.
