The War Comes Home

A reporter cannot become too emotionally involved in a story. But, when a soldier's body was returned to his wife, I struggled to hold back my tears.

A drought by any other name....

One person’s dry spell is another’s drought. There are many definitions of drought but in many cases it’s a matter of perception or expectation.

The Atmosphere…

We live at the bottom of a ‘sea of air’ known as the atmosphere. The outermost part of this ‘sea of air’ reaches more than 500 miles above the surface of the Earth. Early attempts at studying the nature of the atmosphere used clues from the weather, the beautiful multi-colored sunsets and sunrises, and the twinkling of stars. Now with the use of sensitive instruments from space, we are able to get a better view of the functioning of our atmosphere.

Derby Forecast: Partly cloudy with a chance of a sunburn

You’ve got you love this time of the year. Temperatures are finally warm, flowers are in bloom and the first Saturday of May is just right around the corner. There are always lots to do and see across Kentuckiana this time of the year. So while you’re preparing for a trip to Churchill Downs this weekend or getting ready for that annual Derby Party, don’t forget about the dangers that a nice day in May can bring.

Reporter's Notebook from Cruising Lawsuit

City attorneys argue that the cruising lawsuit should have never been filed in federal court, but it was quite an interesting experience inside Judge Jennifer Coffman's courtroom.

Severe Thunderstorm Ingredients

Here in Kentuckiana, we’ve learned to live with the threat of severe weather, especially during the spring months. However, it must be noted that severe thunderstorms do not strike out of chance. Certain ingredients must come together to create conditions that are favorable for the development of those big boomers. These ingredients include; instability, vertical wind shear, lift and moisture

You've seen the LMPD Compstat reports on WHAS11.com. I sat down with LMPD Col. Phil Turner to talk about how the department uses these crime maps and statistics to find trends and attack them.

Don't Call If Your Cat is in a Tree

Forget those cartoon firefighters who rescue cats out of trees. As a rule, they don't do it. "When a cat gets hungry, it will come down on its own," we are told by our instructors as the Jefferson County Media Fire Academy continues. Feline independence notwithstanding, firefighters do a lot more than just fight fires.

Where there is smoke, there is fire. That's understood. But, what you might not realize is, more often than not, it's the smoke and not the fire that kills you.

Outbreak of severe weather leads to the return of winter…

Unfortunately, our spell of unseasonably warm weather has departed with the storms from last night. The severe weather was a classic result of the clash of seasons and now we are left to deal with the cold once again.

Fired Up!

I have covered some of the worst fires in recent years, particularly the Zane Street Warehouse fire, the Bardstown fire which killed ten people and the North Vernon, Indiana fire which killed four generations of one family. But the majority of fires I have covered had far more succesful outcomes. Firefighting is both a celebrated and underappreciated profession. So, when I was invited behind the scenes with Jefferson County firefighters, I jumped in to see how they really do what they do.

A storm is a storm....or is it?

“Why aren’t you issuing a tornado warning?” yelled the man over the phone. Up to that point I was having a quiet evening and was pleased with the way the forecast was going. Admittedly, I was a bit shocked as I didn’t have a mention of a tornado in my forecast and in fact was calling for clear skies that night. A tornado happening with a clear forecast can really mess up your accuracy ratings, not to mention your confidence.

Cards Come Up Short

After a steller first half in which the Louisville Cardinals led Pitt by 11 points it looked as if they were going to make it to the Big East Championship game. But instead of continuing playing lock-down defense and sharing the ball the Cards resorted back to their old selves.
