Greg Bailey | Panthers' players-only meeting

October 3, 2007

Greg Bailey

WCNC Sports Director
The Panthers have called a “players only team meeting” following Sunday’s loss and Kris Jenkins’ frank assessment of his team’s heart and desire.

Calling your teammates’ effort “garbage” can go one of two ways – really good or really bad. I’ve covered a bunch of teams that have called these meetings. It’s not unusual, and sometimes it’s effective. After spending the afternoon in the Panthers locker room, I’m convinced this team is meeting for all the right reasons.

Ken Lucas and David Carr both pointed out that no one is pointing fingers, and you get the feeling that’s straight up and true. Carr calmly explained that the meetings can simply remind players that your teammates and your friends are depending on you. Carr says the bonds that develop in the locker room are a great motivating factor to play better while playing for the men who line up next to you.

We also got to hear from Steve Smith today after there were some thoughts that Smitty was done talking to the media. He was reflective and insightful, saying talking after games when he’s upset serves no purpose. We’ll highlight Steve’s insights on WCNC at 6 and 11 p.m. Good Stuff.

David Carr also said that his performance will improve this week. Carr said simply slowing down a little bit will allow him to read the field more effectively. Practice this week will help. Carr has paid particular attention to the unique way Steve Smith gets in and out of his cuts. Smith sees what a defense is doing and makes his move “yesterday,” according to Carr.
