Bobby Sisk | My TV wife saved me

June 21, 2006

Bobby Sisk

6NEWS Anchor

There are some really cool aspects to this job. I was on a short vacation last week when our promotions director called and said he had something he needed me and Colleen to do. One would assume that meant some type of extra work. Oh no, I do not call a trip to New York to for a promo shoot with Matt Lauer and Meredith Viera work. And I was proven right Monday morning.

6NEWS

Bobby and Colleen were in New York for a promo shoot with "Today" show anchors Matt Lauer and Meredith Viera.

Let me start at the hotel around 8 a.m. where things didn’t exactly go so smoothly. I started the shower and didn’t have hot water. Then, I had a Seinfeld flashback. Think, low flow shower. It was at that point, already feeling the day may be off to a weird start, when I realized I didn’t have my razor. I’m the type of guy who needs to shave twice a day. I knew the Today show folks would not be impressed. What did I do? You’re right, I called Colleen's room. Granted, she handed over a slightly used pink “venus” razor contoured for the female anatomy. But, I rolled with it. A few minutes later, I was clean shaven and ready to face the cameras. My TV wife had saved me from my own absent mind.

Now to the experience at Rockefeller Center and NBC. It was great. From the moment we set foot in the place, we were treated like very special guests. People often don’t realize that we do our own hair, makeup and wardrobe. Not here… not at NBC. One guy took our jackets so he could steam them. Then it was off to makeup and hair where we each had our own artist. Now, I could get use to that. Just imagine me at 4:30 in the morning, trying to rub on some makeup and powder. Guys aren’t good at that…and I’m the best example. So, I’ve decided I need people. I need a posse whose job it is to make me look my best way too early in the morning. Bosses, are you listening? FYI, I’m not holding my breath on that one.

Ann Curry stopped to take a quick picture with Bobby.

As I waited to go in to meet Matt and Meredith, I kept seeing other Today members walking by. I went complete tourist on Ann Curry and she was gracious enough to snap a picture with me. Natalie Morales was next in my photo shoot. Both were very nice and even more beautiful in person. They were like anyone you’d meet at the grocery store, or in your neighborhood. Ann, in fact, was in her jeans and converse basketball shoes.

A few minutes later, we were handed our freshly steamed jackets, and led into the studio where Matt and Meredith were finishing up with a station from Orlando. Our spoiling continued, as the crew set the lights on the set for me and Colleen. As 7 cameras rolled, Matt and Meredith came in and we quickly felt like old friends. Seriously, both were the nicest and most sincere folks you’d ever want to meet. You’ll eventually see this footage on the station as Meredith’s September Today show debut approaches. I asked Matt how it felt. How had he and his new co-anchor connected? Sounds a little cheesy, but it’s something that you can’t just create. People either click or they don’t. Well, these two really click. Matt said it felt strangely normal already. I hope viewers end up seeing that and I think they will.

Bobby and Colleen in the Big Apple.

All in all, this turned out to be a great experience and in true NBC fashion, was first class. From a cold shower and an almost no razor morning, it turned into a great day. And by the way, Colleen's writing her own blog on our trip and meeting Meredith especially. Make sure and read her's next.

Thanks for watching, and as always, feel free to email me or anyone else on the morning crew with comments or concerns. We enjoy hearing from you!

What a great blog! You seem like such a nice down to earth guy-And talk about chemistry! You and Colleen and Larry have the best! I could see you all doing the Today show with no problem. You're so great to watch every morning, which I do while I'm dealing with cold water and no razor to shave my legs! :)
Keep up the good work. I'm so impressed with the way you handle the news with just enough humor to make the start of my day worthwhile.

Very cool story. I don't get the chance to catch you in the mornings but am often able to see the afternoon news while at the gym. Keep up the good work.
