NewsChannel 36 has partnered with Carolina Raptor Center to bring you pictures as Savannah, a bald eagle in captivity due to injuries, takes care of her nest. Her mate is Derek Carolina Raptor Center has five Bald Eagles on display in the Betty J. and J. Stanley Livingstone eagle aviary. All of the resident birds at CRC have injuries that prevent them from being able to survive in the wild. The nesting pair of bald eagles, Derek and Savannah, came to CRC from South Carolina in 1998. Both birds are approximately 16 years old. Derek was the victim of a gunshot wound to the right wing, which left him with limited flight capabilities. Savannah was found in 1995 with a fractured left wing which left her with limited flight as well. In 2004, Savannah surprised everyone at CRC by laying two eggs, but the eggs did not hatch. No eggs were laid in 2005. In 2006, Savannah laid two eggs, hatched and raised both chicks, and CRC was able to successfully release them into the wild (it is rare for bald eagles to have two chicks survive to the age of fledging in the wild)! Thanks to generous donations from the community, CRC was able to purchase two satellite tracking devises and attached them to the eaglets when they were released. They are still alive and appear to be doing well. To see where they are today, visit http://gisserv1.uncc.edu/website/cagiseagle. In 2007, Savannah laid two eggs, both of which hatched, but tragically did not survive an unusually heavy rainstorm that caused some flooding to the nest overnight. This unfortunate event was a solemn reminder of just how fragile young eagle chicks are. In the wild, only a small percentage of bald eagle chicks that hatch live to adulthood. In late January, Savannah laid two eggs on the ground near the nest and CRC staff relocated them into the nest. Savannah took to the new nest and was able to successfully hatch both eggs. Unfortunately, one chick was born with a genetic defect and died soon after hatching (which is not a rare occurrence in the wild). Thankfully, Savannah successfully raised the healthy chick, and CRC was able to release it into the wild! Click here for a web cam of Savannah's nest. 17 CommentsLeave a comment |

My daughter sent me the link this morning and I have been watching it most of the day. I have since forwarded it on to all my friends at work and they have forwarded it to their friends. I understand that we will be putting Savannah's web cam on a large screen monitor in the office so everyone can keep track of her progress.
Very impressive.

I just heard about the eagle cam and love it! I live on Lake James NC and have been very fortunate to have watched the nesting pair here for the past 10 years.Last year there was a terrible wind storm that blew the nest out of the tree.We were so worried that the eagles would not return.Luckily, they rebuilt the nest in late summer and now is bigger than ever in the same cove. A couple of years ago, they had 3 chicks which I think is very rare. It was amazing to watch the young eagles crammed into their nest until they got out and began hopping around around on the limbs, stretching their wings! We have been watching them all winter, fishing and soaring around the lake. Many people don't realize that there are nesting eagles in western NC. Come to Lake James and try to catch a sight of this magnificent bird!
This has been a fantastic experience. I cannot wait to see the baby eagles hatch!
Wow, Absolutely Incredible!
This is soooooo cool i found out about it from one of my teachers at school everyone in my class likes it i think and thank you for setting this up and i cant wait until the eggs hatch
I heard you talking about Savanna on the evening news. I ran straight to my computer and pulled up this website. I find myself checking on Savannah quite often, this is simply amazing. Thank you so very much for letting me share Savannah's special event.
I'm so sorry the eggs aren't going to hatch. Hopefully, next time things will go better. I've watched Savannah so much these past weeks that I've become attached to her and the other eagles. Thanks for letting us have the opportunity to be a part of this. I hope you do so again in the future.
the birds are the cutest thing ever i am coming to see them soon
