Friday was truly a sad day at Panthers camp. I think as fans and even members of the media sometimes we are quick to forget that while they are all Carolina Panthers, the team is made up of an offensive and defensive unit that have to pound on each other relentlessly during practice. In no way do I think that excuses Steve Smith and Ken Lucas for coming to blows on Friday, but I do think fans need context for this incident. (Read more about the fight and see photos.)

There will be plenty of people who are going to use this incident to say that Steve Smith hasn't grown up or changed despite his past. I would beg to differ. I have seen too many acts of kindness and charity from Smith that we have not put on the news, and I know better. While still very wrong, today's incident is nothing like his past problems. The last time Smith got into a fight with a teammate it was 2002 in a film room and it was a fellow receiver. Smith has admitted his wrongdoing, apologized and paid in many ways for that mistake; it should be forgiven and forgotten. Again, while in no way can Friday's actions be excused, it was a throw down between two fierce competitors who are battling each other on a daily basis. In less than a minute after the fight was broken up, Steve was making the effort to apologize to Ken.

At this point we don't know who started this fight or why. Simply because of his past, people will say it was Smith. It doesn't help that it was Lucas who got the worst of it, but that doesn't mean he didn't start it. Even if Lucas did pick the fight, Smith isn't justified for retaliating. That is where he should have learned from his past and his anger management should have paid off.

I promise you that very soon, Steve will step up, accept responsibility for his mistake and pay for it how ever Jerry Richardson and the team decides that he should.

I am not exactly sure how to say this, I only know what I want to say.
Who is this Smith character that he can break someones nose by assaulting him, and not be arrested?
The news I hear is that the Panther team has punished Smith for this assault on one of there team members. That's it? Where are the police? If a regular person assaults someone they get arrrested and go to jail.
The new police Chief not enforcing the law is co-signing this double standard by not taking the action to have this man arrested.
Is the price to have victory in athletics any price? How can you as a news agency overlook this flagrant double standard and fail to even mention it as if no one else will consider it. Are you interested in justice for all or is it "JUST US".
The man broke the law and there are courts paid for by citizens to deal with violations of the law.
I have not heard one comment about this assault being illegal or of any pending arrest. All the news stations are content to sweep this under the rug and treat this assault like a temper tantrum of a 2 year old. This man is not a two year old and he knows exactly what he is doing and is responsible for what he does.
This just confirms an underlying awareness, IF ONE HAS MONEY THEN ONE CAN GET AWAY WITH MURDER. Not speaking out against it or ignoring it in the hope that it will fix itself is hypocritical and enables this behavior. This will happen again, so that will give you something else to report on.

That's all I have for know.
