The trade for safety Chris Harris is one the Panthers had to make, and it had nothing to do with Nate Salley’s knee injury.

The first threes days of training camp it was obvious to everyone who watched that Carolina needed help at safety. Even if Salley and Deke Cooper play as well or better than expected, the Panthers need more.

Age and mileage have clearly taken a toll on Mike Minter, though when you talk to Mike, he does make you believe he can still play at a high level. Harris is young at just 24 years old, and his teammates in Chicago loved him and his attitude.

One by one, the Bears defensive backs lined up to sing Harris’s praises after he left Chicago’s training camp. That came after Harris was informed of the trade and stopped to pay his respects to Chicago head coach Lovie Smith. Sounds like a class act and every bit worth a fifth-round draft pick.

Hats off to GM Marty Hurney for a couple of things: pulling the trigger on a deal that needed to be made, and not panicking earlier in the summer when he could have easily paid far more for a player with less ability. Don’t worry about hurt feelings or how Harris will fit in. If it’s clear he can help the Panthers, team leaders will make sure he feels comfortable in Carolina.
