My guilty pleasure

The “Steve Harvey Show” is my guilty pleasure. I listen every morning. Occasionally, I bring up stuff I hear in our morning editorial meeting (Other people are bringing up news from NPR, articles form the New York Times -- I’m working the Steve Harvey angle). I know almost his whole routine in “Kings of Comedy” (shot in Charlotte!) by heart (Ain’t a church in America that ain’t got a building fund. Ain’t changed a door knob on the church, but you got a building fund). I was excited when the show was coming live to Charlotte and even more excited when my co-worker/friend Melody wanted to go too!

I woke up at 4 a.m., took a shower, put the make-up on and showed up to see the show and help take pictures for the web. My preparation did not compare to the hundreds of women who showed up with hair and make-up done to the nines. These women had been in line for hours! I think I needed to put a little more on. I did look better than the girl who was sitting in our row. She fell asleep, despite Ruben Studdard singing, the roars of laughter and cheers, and one woman with a tambourine. She was out. She must’ve been in line since last night. Poor thing. I looked for a pillow to give her. Couldn’t find one.

Although I’m used to listening to the show in my car, I thought watching it live may be not as exciting. WRONG. It was so much fun, and when the radio show hit its commercial breaks, it was even funnier. That’s when the real party started. Next time you get a chance to see Steve Harvey live, go, show up early, get your hair done. And stay awake.

Dear Rachel: Enjoyed reading your article. Just one question - who is Steve Harvey? I must be out of the loop since I have never heard of him. However, I did enjoy hearing about the show. Aunt Rita
