While I love our new 30 minute format for Friday Night Blitz, I am not sure Mother Nature was thinking of that when she soaked the area last Friday night!

But for us high school football devotees, it’s like Christmas twice – we had some games Friday night, and even more on Monday night. So Friday Night Blitz made a 15 minute cameo appearance to start our week.

I have to say slipping back into our 15 minute format almost didn’t seem right. It’s just not enough time talking about one of the greatest sporting events around the entire country - Friday night football. Our parent network didn’t create a new show this season called Friday Night Lights for nothing!

We’d love to cover every game in our area. We’re able to get to 14 of them, and while I’m not encouraging the North Carolina High School Athletic Association to sprinkle games throughout the week, it was nice to have multiple nights in order for us to cover more games.

The unpredictability of the sport is one its many charms – Country Day’s surprising come-from-behind win over Latin is just the latest example – which wrapped up the CISAA title. The way the sport brings out the best in student-athletes is another. Take Daryl Vereen – the North Meck senior running back rushed for a career-high 320 yards and three touchdowns, as his team clinched at least a share of its first ME-CA 6 4A conference championship since 1982 with a 45-28 victory Monday against Concord Robinson.

I’m really looking forward to a short week - this Friday night we have plenty of great games on the schedule, Butler vs. Independence being just one to mention.

See you on the Blitz!

Ira
