Could Chris Daughtry's dismissal from "American Idol" be the end for North Carolina fans? Well, OK, not the end, but if what I saw around the office this morning is any indication, there is certainly a drop in interest.
Let me preface this by saying I don’t watch "American Idol" (yeah, I'm the one), but I know what's going on. I know because of what I overhear on Wednesday mornings as co-workers who do watch discuss it and recap their favorite (and least favorite) moments.
I came into work today ready for what I usually expect on Wednesdays: "Idol" chatter. Today was different. No one was buzzing with the usual talk about what happened on last night's episode.
Even last week, when the last N.C. native Chris Daughtry was kicked off, my co-workers huddled with rumors of conspiracies about busy phone lines, "Idol" producers and America not making the final decision to kick off Chris.
This week I was ready for the usual discussions about the remaining three contestants.
Normally at one point someone will ask The Question: "Did you see 'Idol' last night"? This phrase seems to bring everyone around me into a tizzy as they discuss the show, and I am instantly updated. See, I have no reason to watch, they bring be up to date.
Now that Chris is gone though, discussions seem half-hearted. Maybe this is an outsider's view looking in, but the usual excitement and enthusiasm seems to have left the office.
Sure, a few people discussed the show. Briefly. Apparently Elliot was boring. Katherine sang horribly, but redeemed herself. And Taylor, of course, will win.
That's what I hear anyway, but something is different. The magic of the show seems to be gone for my co-workers. The discussions are brief and businesslike, and not extended and excited like in weeks past. Maybe I'm imagining it, but I swear I overheard several people say that they were not as interested in the show now that N.C. is no longer represented.
So I have no recap this week, but I did get some work done since I was not consumed with spying on my co-worker's conversations (professional curiosity, of course).
But what do you think? Has "Idol" lost its luster now that N.C. is no longer in the running? You can vote here to tell us what you think in our unscientific pop culture poll.
It's not that NC is no longer in the running. I've lost all respect for the show. They stress that "America voted". Well, after America votes, then the producers alter that vote as they see fit. That is not what they advertise and that is not right. The spark is gone from the excitement of watching the show. I did not watch this week and don't plan to watch in the future.
I think Hicks will win he is good and everyone likes to watch him now he knows what to do on stage. He is so cute. I love his smile. Go shore patrole
chris shoulda won, not only because he was from N.C., but because he WAS the best.
Chris was absolutely the best on there and I was so saddened to hear he was kicked off. He is the hottest thing that has happened to the show and for him to leave has definately made it non-existant to me. I don't care to watch it now. Not because he's from NC, but because he was the best and I feel he was cheated. Just my two cents worth! LOVE YOU CHRIS. I will buy whatever you put out.
It's not because NC is no longer represented, it's because the voting is rigged by the show's producers. There's no way Chris should have been voted off. Enough said.
Many times, I feel that the American Idol show has been a set-up.
Katherine in the producer's eyes is the most marketable. She has the looks and flaunts her body. She also has a great singing voice, but not the natural talent. She can be trained however.
With Chris, he is a much more stronger and talented singer and would have been a tough competitor for Katherine. Ultimately, the producers want to sell the most CDs so they wanted Katherine as the end result. Chris was eliminated early on in the so called "You Vote for YOUR IDOL" process.
Didn't watch this week. Will not watch next season. It's so obvious now that the producers are 'tweeking' the vote tally only for the shock value. It is a shame.
They SHOULD rig the vote! The producers are going to pump a lot of money into the career of the winner. Would you seriously go with who "America" voted for? (Look who else we've voted for.)
I've never liked American Idol, and can't understand all of the hoopla! The show is boring and cheesy. I'm ready for some football!!!
An example of improper voting, the winner over Clay Aiken, never heard of since. Who was the real winner? So, no more American Idol for me.
I THINK TAYLOR HICKS WILL BE THE WINNER. MY VOTE WOULD HAVE BEEN FOR CHRIS DAUGHTERY. I HOPE THAT HE WILL HAVE A RECORDING CONTRACT WITH SOMEONE IN THE FUTURE. I WILL DEFINITELY BY HIS CD.
You're right! All season, Clay Aiken was NEVER in the bottom half and then he SUPRISINGLY lost to Ruben.
Now, Clay's success has far exceeded Ruben's, even without having to be the "American Idol".
(The producers probably got greedy and decided that they could make out well with both of them by arranging the votes).
Get over it! If you think the show is rigged then don't watch it! There can only be ONE winner and this year it's obviously not going to be CHRIS!
