It’s a sad day for me. I feel like I’ve lost a friend. I feel like Katie Couric broke up with me.
I’ve met Katie twice. The first time was when we started our morning program here at WCNC. The station sent me, along with Larry Sprinkle and John Snyder, to New York to record promos with the Today show talent. She was gracious and kind… but the whole encounter was just a few minutes long.
The second time was about five years ago when I did a “behind the scenes” piece with the Today show.
When I was done with my interviews I called my husband and cried. He thought my interview with Katie must have been a disaster or that she was a diva. But my tears were because I was so moved by how amazing she was.
You have to understand I’ve always loved and admired Katie. I’d built her up in my head to be a certain kind of woman. She didn’t disappoint. Katie was warm, genuine, funny, kind, beautiful and gracious.
If I do say so myself, we really hit if off! In fact, she even gave me her phone number (not her home number… but her now no-longer-working number at her NBC office) and told me to call if I wanted career advice.
Katie is a busy woman. For her to take so much time with me was so completely unnecessary. She inspired me. I will always treasure that day I spent with her and the things she said to me.
I know people will criticize today’s Today show which was dedicated to her goodbye. People will say it was too much... over the top. The critics will make fun of the piece on Katie’s hairstyles. I loved every minute of it. My mornings won’t be the same.
I totally agree. I'm 32 years old and I have watched Katie for 15 years on the Today Show. I personally loved the goodbye show and thought NBC had a lot of class to do that. There is no reason for them to burn bridges with each other. It won't be the same in the mornings but maybe Katie Couric is right and it is time for a change.
Oh Colleen...thank heavens for you! I wasn't sure what I would do when Chris Justice went to the afternoon/evening news, but felt secure that you would still be there. And, of course, I'd always have Katie & Matt. That changed today! Katie is class, humor, and girl next door all rolled into one. Although I wish her luck in her upcoming endevour, I will miss her smile and playful banter with Matt each morning. All of the things about Katie that will make me miss her, are things I see in you Colleen, so please don't abandon me too! :-)
FYI Colleen, I too feel a huge loss over Katie's leaving and the Today Show will never be the same. HOWEVER, I think we are lucky here in Charlotte to have you. You are very much like Ms. Couric -- warm, funny, compassionate, and a top notch interviewer who "tells it like it is." So, no matter what, until 8:00 am weekdays, I can still have someone of Katie's callibre to relate to.
yeah she does seem like a down to earth lady and thats what i like..warm,kind, .....u think shes thoughtful too? wheres mine? but i bet shes laughing all the way to bank of america too!! u think?
Colleen, you are wonderful and our very own Katie in Charlotte. You are so professional, compassionate and excellent at your job. I can always count on you to begin my day with laughter!
I remember watching that segment back when it originally aired... and then you [Colleen] were talking about how Katie kept calling you "Charleen" because she was mixing up Colleen and Charlotte haha. She seemend really sweet.. and I loved that interview. It'll be different in the mornings now for all of us. And I agree w/ what Lisa said.. you are our very own Katie.
Katie Couric has always seemed to be TOO Perky for me. I could tolerate her for a small amount of time, IF she did not smile with that big, big mouth of hers. She reminds me of all those car commercial blond bimbos.
i cant beleive you people worship a "NEWS" person who is so partison. they would not let her(katie) make up news at NBC about president Bush but they will at CBS.
Because I leave for work about 6:30 a.m., I DVR/d Katie's last morning. Can you imagine how upset I am that my husband deleted the program after he watched it?????????!!!!!! I was upset beyond words when I tried to watch it and discovered it gone forever!!
Get a life people! She is just a news anchor. You would think she found a cure for cancer the way people are carrying on about her....
I, too, feel a great loss with Katie Couric's move to CBS. She has started out my mornings with great poise, beauty, humor, tears, and information. I did not watch the "last" morning. I knew it would be much for the day.
