It may be “March Madness” time in the Carolinas and elsewhere but golf was in the air Tuesday morning in Charlotte.

Wachovia Championship officials held their annual Media Day at the Quail Hollow Club to get us media types informed and prepped for the upcoming PGA tournament.

Defending Wachovia champion Vijay Singh was not able to make it to Quail Hollow due to a scheduling conflict but did speak to those of us present via a satellite hook-up. In a nutshell Singh said the number one thing that impressed him about playing the Wachovia is the great fan support in Charlotte. He also added that many of his fellow tour players love playing here because the large galleries make the event seem like a major tournament.

Tournament officials informed the media that the purse for this year’s event will surpass $6 million with the winners take to be a whopping $1,080,000!

One new facility for fans this year will be what Wachovia officials are calling the ‘patron message center’. It will be located behind the first tee where fans can leave and check messages from family, friends, co-workers, etc.

Also a new service this year for fans who have opted into electronic updates will receive daily updates via e-mail. Newsletter will include daily parking reminders, weather reports, daily tee times, leaderboard and policy reminders.

Following the morning news conference we were able to go play the beautiful Quail Hollow Club course. After suffering through some problems with the greens late last year the grounds crew at Quail have obviously gotten the problem straightened out as the greens were in great shape and suffice it to say very, very fast!

The rest of the course looks to be coming in perfectly and should be in prime condition come the first week of May when the tournament begins.
