It's Friday and the end is in sight for me... (part 2)

I was up again at 4 a.m. to operate a satellite truck for the Belo national crew. I am tired, and ready to take a long plane ride home tomorrow. I am looking forward to getting back to Charlotte, but I feel bad about leaving when there is so much that needs to be done here.

Several of the staff members at WWL are on their way to New Orleans to survey the damage at their building, and take fuel to their generator. It is a dangerous mission, and they are taking security with them. In addition, the National Guard will be there to help get them in and out quickly. Fuel is a big issue in New Orleans. The concern is that the people left inside the city will see the fuel truck and try to steal it. These people are desperate to find a way out, and many are carrying weapons. I worry for the safety of these employees.

We are able to get our crews and trucks closer to the damaged areas now, but there is no electricity or water, and no place to stay. Several crews are getting ready to sleep in the satellite trucks tonight. I feel very fortunate that I am in Baton Rouge, and not in New Orleans.

I want everyone who reads this to realize that this type of disaster is possible anywhere, at anytime. It may not be a hurricane, or a flood, but a natural disaster is always a possibility. Take stock of your lives, and be thankful that you aren't living through this. Pray for the people whose lives will never be the same. Pray also for the rescue workers who are risking their lives to help a person in need. Most of all, pray for guidence in your own lives, and find a way to help.
