Here we go again as another monster hurricane heads our way, not as bad for us in NOLA but still pretty bad. Many areas in and around the Katrina affected areas are once again being evacuated due to the threat of the small storm surge 5-7 feet and heavy rain. Normally the area could handle this, but with the weakened levees and minimal pumping capacity the city could flood again. There is even water already rising in some parts of the city that were just pumped dry yesterday due to water seeping through the levees. The sad thing is no one knows for sure where the water is coming from. Tides are already about 4 feet above normal and winds at the coast are 60 mph with huge waves. What worries me is the heavy rainfall. Normally the city has to pump rainfall runoff out of the city. Well only like 10 percent of the pumps are working and not at full capacity. There could be some freshwater flooding this time. Here in Baton Rouge we are probably going to get it worse as I am forecasting a landfall at Lake Charles, La. Farther east then the current forecast based on my experience. Brad |
