Trip to Mandeville, LA

We went to Mandeville, LA this morning. I have never seen the amount of destruction that was there. So many houses damaged, trees uprooted, and a restaurant completely destroyed. It was really sad.
I talked to some people who chose to stay and ride out the storm on the front porch of their home. They said that it was the scariest thing they had ever been through.

Yesterday, we made it to Metairie and Kenner. They are about 10 miles outside of New Orleans. There was so much flooding, you could not tell where the river and creeks began. City streets were turned into canals. Over 200 people showed up at the command center, with boats ready to go in and rescue whoever they could find. One police officer we talked to had lost everything he owned. The only thing he had left was the uniform he was wearing, but he was still out doing his job and helping others. We saw people walking west on interstate 10, toward Baton Rouge, just trying to get out to a shelter. Blackhawk helicopters were constantly flying overhead. They were landing with the people they rescued, and lifting off to get more. It was an amazing site.
We are sleeping in our cars, or on the floor of the building we are working out of. I started to complain, and then thought about all the people who aren't as lucky as we are. At least we have a place to stay and food to eat.
