Cora, who went 2-for-4 in his first appearance on Wednesday, is batting second and will play second base again today against the Durham Bulls. He will play shortstop on Friday and will rejoin the Red Sox this weekend. He said this morning that he's 100 percent. He grounded out in his first at-bat.

The PawSox beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 5-2, on a beautiful spring afternoon at McCoy Stadium.
The PawSox scored two runs in the first inning on back-to-back doubles by George Kottaras and Jed Lowrie and an RBI single by Brandon Moss. They added two in the fifth on Jonathan Van Every's two-run homer to right field and one in the seventh on Van Every's RBI single.
The IronPigs, still looking for their first victory in eight games this season, got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning on Jason Jaramillo's leadoff homer and combined three singles for a run in the ninth..
Pawtucket starter David Pauley, apparently on a strict pitch count, left the mound after retiring the first batter he faced in the fifth inning. The right hander allowed five hits and one earned run, walked two and struck out one. He threw 74 pitches, 43 for strikes. Lincoln Holdzkom relieved him and got the win. Abe Alvarez came out for the seventh inning. Dan Kolb started the ninth, and Jon Switzer finished the game.
Lehigh Valley starter Brian Mazone, struck out 10 and did not walk a batter in his six innings.
The first-place Pawsox wrapped up their first homestand with a 6-2 record. They will start an eight-game road trip Friday night in Louisville.

PAWTUCKET -- Four Scranton Wilkes/Barre pitchers combined to throw a two-hitter against Pawtucket to lead the Yankees to an 11-2 victory this afternoon.
Matt DeSalvo (5 innings, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts), Scott Patterson (3 innings, 0 walks, 1 strikeouts), Charlie Manning (2/3 inning, 2 walks, 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 strikeouts), and Colter Bean (.1 inning, 1 strikeout) dominated Pawtucket’s batters.
Chris Carter prevented history from being made in the bottom of the ninth inning when he ripped a two-out single down the third base line off of Manning, who struckout the first two batters he faced.
Only once in International League history has three pitchers combined to no-hit a team in a nine-inning game.
Portland (AA) call-up Cory Keylor hit a two-out, bases-loaded, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning for Pawtucket's only runs of the game.
Pawtucket made things interesting in the bottom of the fourth when DeSalvo walked Jed Lowrie, Jeff Bailey, and Bobby Scales to load the bases with two outs, setting the stage for Keylor to be the hero. DeSalvo, however, struckout Keylor, who was making his PawSox debut.
Rual Chavez broke up Charlie Zink’s no-hitter in the top of the fifth inning with a one-out single to left field. That rattled Zink, who walked three batters with the bases loaded to force in three runs, allowed a two-run single to Bronson Sardinha and a two-run double to Chavez.
The PawSox fans gave Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson a standing ovation for finally taking Zink out of the game after he allowed seven runs (3 earned) on four hits with six walks in the inning. He threw 50 pitches in the fifth.
Lowell call-up Scott Lonergan, 23, replaced Zink with the bases loaded and two outs. He struckout Brett Gardner to end the inning.
Duncan crushed a two-run double down the first base line with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning. Keylor misplayed the ball and a third run scored while Duncan advanced to third base. Duncan scored on a Mike Kinkade ground out to give the Yankees an 11-0 cushion.

The Board of Trustees of Minor League Baseball announced recently that it has established a Search Committee from its membership to screen candidates for nomination for the Presidency of Minor League Baseball. Mike Moore, who has been President since 1992, announced recently that he is retiring at the end of his current term, which expires December 31, 2007.
Mike Tamburro, President of the Pawtucket Red Sox, was selected by the Search Committee as its Chair. The other members of the Committee are Frank Burke (Chattanooga Lookouts), Alan Stein (Lexington Legends) and Bob Beban (Eugene Emeralds).
The new president will be elected to a four-year term, beginning January 1, 2008 and ending December 31, 2011. The election will take place at this year’s Baseball Winter Meetings, December 3-6 in Nashville.
The National Association Agreement, the corporate charter that governs Minor League Baseball, outlines a process for the Board of Trustees to nominate a candidate for election, based on recommendations by a search committee.
“Our job is to present the Board of Trustees with the names of the best available candidates,” said Tamburro. “Our goal is to have a list of candidates for presentation to the full Board prior to September 1,” Tamburro added.
The September 1 date is important because, under the National Association Agreement, the names of candidates selected by the Search Committee must be submitted to the Board of Trustees at least 90 days prior to the Winter Meetings. At a Board of Trustees meeting in late September, the Board will attempt to narrow the Search Committee’s list of candidates down to a single nominee. The nomination and election process also permits individual leagues to nominate candidates shortly before the commencement of the Winter Meetings.
Minor League Baseball was founded in 1901 as the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues and has served as the governing body for the industry since that time. In its 107 year history, Minor League Baseball has had only ten presidents. Under the National Association Agreement, the President serves as Minor League Baseball’s Chief Executive Officer charged with authority and responsibility to administer the National Association Agreement and the policies adopted by the Board of Trustees.

Very quietly, Runelvys Hernandez has become one of the PawSox most effective starting pitchers.
He’s also their unluckiest.
Yesterday against the Ottawa Lynx, Hernandez ate up six strong innings, but once again suffered from a lack of run support in what played out as a quiet, 2-1 PawSox loss, before a cozy Lynx Stadium gathering announced as 1,231.
Pitching better than his 0-3 mark would indicate, Hernandez, who has seen big league time with Kansas City, scattered seven hits while walking three and fanning seven.
“I thought my guy pitched a good ball game,” said Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson. “It’s just unfortunate that we’ve struggled with run support for him. He’s a veteran pitcher who knows what it’s like to pitch out there in these types of games.”
Hernandez, who declined to comment about his outing, has held the PawSox close in each of his six starts, but hasn’t had the offensive backup from his mates. Thus, the fine 2.45 ERA without a win to show for it.
“Every time he takes the ball,” said Johnson, “I have to figure he’s going to give me about six innings of work. He was no different today.”
Hernandez’s opposite number, Ottawa fireballer J.D. Durbin (1-3), pitched into the ninth before giving up a leadoff double to Chad Spann, who later scored the PawSox lone run on a Bobby Scales sacrifice fly.
Durbin is a former Minnesota prospect who was briefly a PawSox this season (without appearing for them). Like Hernandez, Durbin is attempting to reenergize his career.
“It’s been a little slow getting back on track,” said Durbin. “(But) I felt all good all day. I hope I can build off of this start.”
Ottawa nicked Hernandez for both of its runs in the bottom of the third, with former PawSox Lou Collier and Gary Burnham delivering consecutive RBI singles.
Hernandez was solid thereafter until handing the game off to the Pawtucket bullpen in the bottom of the seventh.
Johnson feels that Hernandez has pitched himself onto Boston’s radar, and that the blip gets a little stronger with each productive start.
“He’s already got the experience,” Johnson said, “and he’s got the credentials. You can tell he’s throwing the ball well.”

Gomer Hodge, whose southern drawl helped him become a sort of folk hero during the Cleveland Indians' dismal 1971 season, died Sunday after a long battle with Lou Gehrig's disease, his wife said Monday. He was 63.
Hodge also was a former coach with the Pawtucket Red Sox.
Born as Harold Morris Hodge, he earned the nickname “Gomer” because of his uncanny resemblance to actor Jim Nabors, who starred as a bumbling Marine in the television show “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” He also sounded like Gomer Pyle because of his thick North Carolina accent, his wife said.
“He was just a hometown, earthy kind of guy and I think that's what made him so endearing,” said his wife, Linda Hodge. “They nicknamed him Gomer and it stuck. It became his professional name.”
Hodge tallied 16 pinch hits during his single season with the Indians, and after going 4-for-4, he excitedly told sports writers he was batting 4.000.
But he recorded only 83 official at-bats and a .205 batting average as the Indians lost more than 100 games in 1971. His lone home run came that September in Fenway Park.
Hodge spent the next two decades in places such as the Class A Midwest League, but he reached Class AAA Pawtucket as a coach with the Red Sox in 2001.
Services will be held Tuesday in Rutherfordton. Survivors also include his son Nicholas, 25, and his 20-year-old daughter, Morgan.

Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson and third baseman Chad Spann started a new tradition yesterday.
Before the PawSox’ series finale with Toledo, Johnson took the young infielder to Quiznos for lunch -- "and I never buy the sandwiches," Johnson quipped -- and last night, Spann had his best offensive night of the season, going 3-for-4 with a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning.
The shot to the berm in left field was Spann’s first homer of the season and was the capper of Pawtucket’s 3-1 win over the Mud Hens.
"I’m excited about Spann. He’s taken his lumps, but he’s handling himself with a maturity beyond his years," Johnson said of the 23-year old Georgia native.
Spann came into the game hitting just .202 with two RBI in 30 games this season. Last year, his fifth in the Red Sox farm system after being drafted in the fifth round of the 2002 draft, Spann was an Eastern League All-Star with Portland. He hit .294 with 50 runs batted in for the Sea Dogs, but had his season cut short in early August after injuring his left ankle running the bases.
Ever superstitious, Johnson told Spann at the end of the game that the two would be back at Quiznos today.
Pawtucket’s win got off to an inauspicious start, as outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury dropped a fly ball in shallow right-center. The ball was a tough get for Ellsbury, but he did get it in his glove and could not hold on. Mud Hens leadoff hitter Ramon Santiago wound up scoring when the next batter, Chris Shelton, doubled to left.
The double to Shelton was the only hit -- and the only baserunner -- allowed by Sox starter Kason Gabbard until the fifth inning. Gabbard had another strong outing, with just two hits and the unearned run in the scorebook, to go with seven strikeouts and one walk.
It was the first time in his last five starts that Gabbard earned a decision. He is now 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA; over his last four starts, he has allowed just four earned runs.
"It’s nice to see that he’s developing the ability to throw strikes with his secondary pitches," Johnson said. "When you get to the big leagues, you can’t throw fastballs to guys like David Ortiz and Manny (Ramirez)."
Pawtucket answered Toledo’s run quickly, cobbling together a run in the home half of the first. Ellsbury led off with a single, advanced on hits by Joe McEwing and David Murphy, and scored on a sac fly by Jeff Bailey.
Though a quick look at the boxscore shows that the Sox left 12 men on base -- they left the bases loaded in each of the first three innings and left two more in the fourth -- Johnson wasn’t bothered by it given how his team has struggled offensively in recent weeks.
"Right now, for us, it’s a positive," he said. "I don’t want to sound like an idiot, but if we load the bases in the first three innings, I’ll take that right now" since Pawtucket was getting men on base and finding the gaps.
Another example of how the PawSox have struggled this season: the win over Toledo was just the second time this season the Sox have won in 8 1/2 innings. The rest of their wins took a full nine innings or extra innings.
NOTES: After going 2-for-4 last night with a walk and a run scored, outfielder David Murphy has now hit safely in eight of his last 10 games, batting 15-for-41 (.366) in the stretch. ... Though top prospect Jacoby Ellsbury’s batting average with the PawSox dropped from .263 to .256 with his 1-for-5 night, his first-inning single to left means he has now reached base safely in all but one of the 10 games he’s played in Pawtucket. ... The Sox are 3-1 on their current 8-game homestand. ... Toledo outfielder Vincent Blue, called up from Erie earlier in the day, made his triple-A debut last night, going 0-for-2 with a walk. ... Last night’s attendance was 4,768. ... Pawtucket opens a four-game series with Durham tonight (7:05 p.m.). PawSox RHP David Pauley (0-1, 3.25 ERA) will oppose RHP Mitch Talbot (2-4, 8.71).

PAWTUCKET — Pawtucket pulled off a dramatic, white-knuckle, 4-3, 10-inning victory over two-time defending Governors’ Cup champion Toledo yesterday at McCoy Stadium.
Down 3-1 with two outs and runners on second and third base in the ninth inning, Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson called on Brandon Moss to pinch-hit.
Moss, who had only one hit in his previous 24 at-bats, smacked the first pitch he saw over the head of Toledo right fielder Timo Perez for a double, driving in David Murphy and Jeff Bailey to tie the score, 3-3.
Suddenly it looked like Pawtucket, a team that has had difficulty winning close games, was going to pull off a dramatic upset.
But Chad Spann, who had only 12 hits in his previous 76 at-bats (.169) before going 2-for-4 yesterday, stranded Moss on second base when he struckout out for the third out. That forced extra innings.
Toledo had teed off for 12 hits against Pawtucket starter Runelvys Hernandez (5 innings, 9 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts) and relievers Edgar Martinez (2 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs, 3 strikeouts) and Travis Hughes (2 innings, 1 hit, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts) so Johnson sent Manny Delcarmen to the mound in the 10th inning to quiet the Mud Hens bats.
He did just that, striking out two of the three batters he faced to give his offense a chance to win it in the bottom of the inning.
The PawSox delivered.
After Jacoby Ellsbury walked with one out, then stole second base. Toledo catcher Dane Sardinha’s throw went into center field and Ellsbury sprinted to third base on the error.
That gave Joe McEwing the chance to be the hero.
Facing a full-count, McEwing belted a Jeremy Johnson pitch to center field for the game-winning hit. Ellsbury trotted home and raised his hands in celebration as he jumped on home plate for the game-winning run.
“In that situation I was just trying to have a quality at-bat and put one in the outfield,” McEwing said.
“Fortunately it got down, and it was a good win for us. I had a feeling that they were trying to pound me inside to get me to roll over to third or to short, so I was looking for something on the inner half of the plate. I got a fastball on the inner half and put a quality swing on it.”
The victory was just Pawtucket’s third in its last 16 outings.
“We are battling every single night,” McEwing said. “We’ve been getting quality pitching and today we got some timely hits. We have to carry the momentum into tomorrow. No matter where you are or what level, you play this game to win.”
“I think our last three wins have all been come-from-behind,” Johnson said. “That shows that these guys have a lot of fight in them and, when we get the little things worked out, this is going to be a fun bunch.”
Sardinha, Toledo’s No. 9 hitter, belted a two-run home run over the left-field fence in the top of the third inning to give Toledo the early 2-0 lead.
The Mud Hens added another run in the fourth. Jake Hannahan led off the inning with a single but he was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first base on Mike Hessman’s double off the left-field wall. Shortstop Alex Prieto made the relay to home. Hessman advanced to third base on the play. Chris Maples drove him in with a two-out single to extend Toledo’s advantage to 3-0.
Pawtucket cut Toledo’s lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Bobby Scales sliced a triple down the right-field line and scored on Kevin Cash’s infield groundout.
“It’s getting to the point where I can’t take him out of the lineup,” Johnson said of Scales.
Pawtucket threatened to close the gap further in the bottom of the eighth inning when Spann and Ellsbury each singled to put runners on first and second base with one out, but McEwing grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

The Pawtucket Red Sox took the lead with a three-run ninth, only to give it up in the bottom of the inning and then lose the game, 5-4, to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in the 10th. It was the sixth straight loss for Pawtucket, and their 10th defeat in 11 games.
Jeff Bailey hit a two-out, bases-loaded double just after fouling a line drive off the side of third-base coach/manager Ron Johnson (Johnson seemed to be in pain, but stayed in the game) to put the PawSox ahead in the ninth. Pawtucket entered the inning down 3-1, but a single, an error and two walks closed the deficit to 3-2 and set the stage for Bailey's hit.
But reliever Mike Burns couldn't close the deal. He walked leadoff hitter Omir Santos, who then stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by Chris Basak. In the 10th, Burns again walked the leadoff man, this time Shelley Duncan, then gave up a single to Bronson Sardinha. After an out and an intentional walk, Santos drove in Duncan with the game-winning run on an infield ground ball; Pawtucket was unable to turn the double play to end the inning.
PawSox starter Kason Gabbard pitched four and a third innings, giving up three runs on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts. He gave up a two-run home run to third baseman Chris Basak in the third inning, after Pawtucket had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on Bailey's RBI double.
The PawSox are now 0-6 on the season against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the New York Yankees' new Triple-A affiliate. The teams play again tomorrow night in Pennsylvania.

BUFFALO -- It was the “Mother of all Meltdowns”.
Ready to book a much-needed win, a near certainty considering the hefty eight-run lead they took into the bottom of the ninth, the Pawtucket Red Sox instead, suffered a crushing 15-14 loss to the Buffalo Bisons, before 5,209 at Dunn Tire Park.
It was the resumption of a game suspended due to rain back on Apr. 23, and the first of a double-header, followed by a scheduled seven inning affair.
Buffalo torched PawSox relievers Craig Hansen and Manny Delcarmen for nine runs in that fateful frame, with Delcarmen (1-2) walking former Red Sox farmhand Mike Rose with the bases loaded, forcing in Ben Francisco with the winning run.
It was just the latest in a long list of heartbreaks and self inflicted wounds suffered by the PawSox, which had lost eight of their previous 10 starts.
This one came at the expense of two of the Sox most highly regarded young arms, beginning with Hansen, who had been called on in the ninth to close out what should have been an easy win.
But Hansen imploded, faced seven Bison hitters, all of whom eventually scored.
He added to his problems botching a fielding attempt, then failing to cover first after a sensational grab by first baseman Jeff Bailey.
Delcarmen inherited the situation, which only worsened as he gave up two hits and a pair of walks.
In the process, former PawSox third baseman Trent Durrington, who had come on to pitch in the bottom of the eighth, wound up being credited with the win.
It was his fifth-ever professional pitching appearance, and second in three days (both against Pawtucket).
And to think that it could have all been so different.
Pawtucket took the field in the bottom of the first clutching the lead given them by Brandon Moss’s three run homer.
The PawSox increased that to 6-0 with a run in the second and two more in the third, when doubles by Jeff Bailey and George Kotteras, sandwiched around a walk to Moss, accounted for the scoring.
But this would not be an easy lead to hold.
Buffalo touched PawSox righty Chris Smith, just up from Double A Portland, for a five spot in the bottom of the third.
The big blow was a two run double by well-traveled Bison catcher Mike Rose.
It took a spectacular running catch by David Murphy in left of a potential gapper by Brad Snyder to keep the tying run from scoring.
But in the top of the fourth, Bailey provided a bit of breathing room by blasting a two-out, two-run homer, his third of the year, which made it 8-5.
The PawSox seemingly blew the contest wide open by plating five runs in the top of the ninth.
But a cave-in of epic proportions was lurking around the corner.
AROUND THE BASES: Smith, who finished last season in the PawSox‘ starting rotation, was sent back to Portland for the start of the season, as part of the Red Sox’ plan to convert him to a reliever…Ellsbury got hits in both ends of the double-header to run his cumulative hitting streak to 17 games (including all 15 games with Portland, this year). He also upped his on-base streak to 27 consecutive games, dating back to Aug. 27, 2006…The PawSox will wrap up their short, two day stay here, this afternoon (1:05 p.m.), with LHP Abe Alvarez (1-3, 6.41) getting the start. He’ll be opposed by Buffalo LHP Jason Stanford (3-0, 2.19).

DURHAM, N.C. -- Ed Rogers had a chance to be a hero in the fifth inning Tuesday night when the 21-year-old shortstop walked to the plate with the bases loaded and the Pawtucket Red Sox still looking for their first run in the series with the Durham Bulls.
Rogers struck out.
“One of my teammates asked me, ‘Why don’t you get mad because you struck out with the bases loaded?’” Rogers said. “I knew the game wasn’t over. I told him ‘Maybe I'll win the game in the next at bat.’
“That’s how I did it.”
Indeed, Rogers made up for his fifth inning failure with a seventh inning success -- he broke up a 1-1 tie with a solo home run that hit the wooden bull atop Durham’s high left-field wall and gave the Pawsox a 2-1 victory over the Bulls in the second game of the fourth-game series between the two International League teams.
“You saw a lot of good pitching all night,” Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson said. “There were some good arms on that field.”
Three of the arms belonged to Johnson’s team. Starter Kason Gabbard (2-0) allowed just one run in his six innings of work. Former catcher Edgar Martinez was overpowering in his two innings of relief and closer Travis Hughes shut the Bulls down in the ninth.
“I was tempted to run Martinez out for another inning, but I’ve got Travis Hughes and Mike Burns and all those guys in the bullpen who have had a couple of days off,” Johnson said. “That’s a very good situation down there. My biggest chore during the day is to make sure I get them in the ballgame.”
Pawtucket needed an outstanding mound performance to overcome a Bulls’ staff that has allowed just two runs in 18 innings so far in this series. Durham starter Jason Hammel (0-1), who pitched five innings on no-hit ball in his first start, shut out the Pawsox on one hit through the first four innings.
Finally, in the fifth inning, Brandon Moss led off with a double into the left-field corner. A walk to Chad Spann and a single by Joe McEwing loaded the bases with no outs and the top of the order coming up.
That’s when Hammel struck out Rogers. But centerfielder David Murphy lined a 2-0 pitch back up the middle that ricocheted off Hammel’s back and blooped just beyond the reach of Durham shortstop Jorge Velandia. That scored Moss with the first Pawsox run of the series and tied the game at 1-1.
“At the same time, [Hammel] did a very nice job,” Johnson pointed out. “We have the bases loaded with no outs and we get one run. I’ll take that kind of damage control any day of the week.”
Gabbard did some pretty good damage control of his own.
The stocky lefthander gave up a solo home run to Durham’s Chris Richard in the first inning, but twice retired the Richard with runners on base to get out of trouble. In the third, he faced the Durham leftfielder with runners on second and third and induced Richard to ground out meekly to second to end the inning.
And in the fifth, Johnson ordered an intentional walk to Durham’s Dustin Mohr to load the bases with two outs for Richard.
“In Mohr, you’ve got a professional right-handed hitter and to me you can’t let him beat you with first base open,” Johnson said. “Even though Richards got Gabby early in the game, I look at it this way, if he’s going to pitch in the big leagues -- and I think he can -- he’s got to get him out right there. And he did.”
That was the last gasp for the Bulls, who managed no hits and just one base runner in the final four innings.

The Pawtucket Red Sox haven't had the greatest luck winning season-opening games on the road.
But a big game from one of the Boston Red Sox's top prospects helped Pawtucket beat the Charlotte Knights 7-4 on Thursday night in both teams International League opener.
Right fielder Brandon Moss -- the MVP in AA Portland's Eastern League championship series win last season -- belted a grand slam in his first AAA at-bat during a five-run first inning to put the PawSox ahead.
Pawtucket then got several key defensive stops, including two inning-ending double plays, to snap a six-game losing streak in road season openers.
Kason Gabbard, who made nine starts with the PawSox in between stints at Portland and Boston last year, went five innings to get the win. He gave up both Charlotte runs off three hits and three walks, while striking out three.
