Hank Steinbrenner says the entire Yankees organization is at fault for the fact that the team is poised to sit out October for the first time since 1993. General manager Brian Cashman, certainly. The coaches. The scouts. The players. Maybe even the guy who drives the team bus to the airport.
He should have taken the bridge instead of the tunnel!
Interestingly, though, the one guy who gets a pass from the Baby Boss is manager Joe Girardi.
"As far as Girardi is concerned, who I think is brilliant, this is his first year and he's had to play the hand he was dealt," Steinbrenner told the New York Post. "Baseball managers can't perform miracles. It's easier for a football coach to do that. For a baseball manager, it's more leadership and having the parts, having the players."
Well, since the Hankster is the one who helped push Joe Torre out the door after 12 straight postseason appearances, and was believed to be the driving force behind picking Girardi over Don Mattingly, it's not surprising that he's being so protective.
In that sense, he's so much different than his famous father, who went through managers the way a guy with a cold goes through Kleenex.
In every other way, though, it appears that this big apple didn't fall far from the tree. And that's not good news for the rest of baseball.
Steinbrenner already is sending clear signals that money will be no object as he tries to rebuild the Bronx Bombers this winter. That probably means big names and eye-popping contract offers to free agents. He's already mentioned CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, even though Burnett has yet to say officially whether he plans to opt out of his contract with the Blue Jays.
If Steinbrenner comes out waving his checkbook early and often, the price of doing business this offseason is about to go up dramatically.
Because it's clear that Hank, like his dad, firmly believes in the Golden Rule: Those Who Have the Gold Rule.
