BOSTON -- Red Sox draft pick and Rhode Island native Ryan Westmoreland has been shut down temporarily due to strength issues and for precautionary measures.
It's not a serious issue for Boston's fifth-round selection (172nd overall), but when he reported to the GCL Red Sox two days after signing a contract worth $2 million on Aug. 17, there was some fatigue in his shoulder.
The Red Sox thought it best to shut him down for the remainder of the short season. The 18-year-old outfielder has been rehabbing and strengthening his shoulder and will be ready for instructional league in two weeks.
