Click the play button below to hear Sean McAdam's comments, recorded this morning. The topics: Josh Beckett's return to the mound tonight in Texas (we think), reinforcements arriving in the infield, and whether the Red Sox will or will not bring back Jason Varitek in 2009.
Here's what Sean said about Varitek:
"Clearly he's not going to be a $10-million-a-year player anymore the way he has been the last four, after signing that new free agent deal after the 2004 World Series. I think they would like to have him return, but I think they would like to perhaps lighten the load and start working someone else into the catching rotation here. There's no secret that Allard Baird, the assistant to Theo Epstein, has been spending a good chunk of the season looking at catching prospects and other options for the Red Sox. In fact, we might get a look at a few of them tonight and over the weekend. The Rangers have a bunch of young catchers, including Taylor Teagarden and Jerrod Saltalamacchia, whom the Red Sox have targeted for some time. Those would seem to be two guys they might make offers [for] in terms of trades. There might be some other free agent possibilities. Clearly they are looking to begin the post-Varitek era, even if Varitek comes back on a more limited basis next year."
Jarrod Saltalamacchia was hurt a couple of days ago - strained forearm. The news out of the Texas Rangers camp is that he is "done for the season".
