Click the play button below to hear Sean McAdam's comments, recorded this morning. The topics: the Orioles' awful pitching, and what to expect today from Baltimore starter Lance Cormier (more of the same): Jason Varitek's turnaround with the bat (hitting .340 over the last 13 games); and Terry Francona's challenge to rest players while still playing to win.
Here's what Sean said about Varitek:
"He's come along pretty nicely over the last two to three weeks and provided a little pop down at the bottom of the order. He's stayed out of those long hitless streaks that seemed to mark his play through the middle of the season. It's still going to take something for him to finish even around .240 for the regular season, but at least he seems to be getting hot at the right time of year. This kind of runs contrary to the career pattern that he has, where he has usually been a pretty good starter and then faded down the stretch, one would imagine because of the demands of the position he plays. Catchers get worn down and beat up over the course of the year, and usually that's been reflected in his hitting in the final two months or six weeks. But for whatever reason that seems to be reversed this year, and he's swinging the bat as we get into the final stretch better than he has all year."
