Brad Valois has put himseslf in strong position to qualify for match play in the U.S. Amateur Championship.
The two-time Rhode Island Amateur champion recorded a 1-over 71 today on the famed No. 2 course at Pinehusrt, N.C. That leaves him in a tie for 36th place in the 315-player field. The top 64 after today's second round earn match-play berths.
Valois was among the leaders when he went out in 1-under 34. The URI star was even through 15 holes before bogeys on both 16 and 17. But he birdied the final hole for his 71. Andrew Putnam of University Place, Wash., and Wesley Bryan of Chapin, S.C., lead at 67.
Brian Higgins of Bellingham, Mass., who qualified at Wannamoisett with Valois and Ben Spitz, also is in good shape. He birdied his final hole for a 71. He played the second course being used for qualifying, Pinehurst No. 4. Spitz, a URI grad, had a 78, which leaves him in a tie for 260th.
Among other scores, Massachusetts native Peter Uihlein is one of the 20 players under par. He had a 1-under 69.
This is a very nice and informative blog. I like it very much.
