Providence's Demetrius Andrade took his first step toward an Olympic welterweight boxing medal, winning a four-round decision from Kakhaber Jvania of Georgia in his opening bout Sunday night in Beijing. Because of the 12-hour time difference, the match was completed Sunday morning local time.

Andrade won the first and third rounds of the four-round fight, with scores of 2-0 in the first round and 6-4 in the third. The second round was a 2-2 tie, and Jvania won the fourth round, 3-1.

Andrade will next face Andrey Balanov of Russia at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning local time in the round of 16. Balanov won a decision over Mujandjae Kasuto of Namibia in his first bout.

The U.S. soccer team missed a chance at its first Olympic victory when Gerald Sibon scored in the 93rd minute, giving the Netherlands a 2-2 with the American team, which features Cranston's Michael Parkhurst as one of its starters. Sacha Kljestan and Jozy Altidore scored for the U.S.

Wow, 6 hours after your comment and they still haven't bothered to fix it. Shows how much they care about Rhody Olympians and soccer in general.

Maybe they need help finding a report of the game?
