Mike Capone is back competing on the golf course again after an eight-month layoff and is playing as well as ever. The former Rhode Island Open, Amateur and Junior champion recorded a 5-under 66 today at Crestwood to take the $5,355 first-place check in the Golfers' Warehouse Tour Nike Championship. That gave the Cranston resident, who had been sidelined because of neck problems, a 36-hole total of 134, one better than first-day leader Rob Oppenheim. Capone went 4-under on the front side to tie Oppenheim for the lead. The two were still tied when Capone birdied the par-3 17th to take the lead. Capone drove into the water on the par-5 closing hole, but he hit a 3-wood to the front edge and got up and down to save par. Oppenheim missed a seven-footer for birdie that could have forced a playoff. Jim Renner, who won the Rhode Island Open last week, had a 64 for 137 total. He tied for third with Andrew Svoboda of New York, who played in the U.S. Open this year, and New Bedford's Kevin Silva. Warren's Greg Sampson and Steve Sokol of Connecticut tied for sixth at 138. |
