Jack Tyler drove in five runs and Chet Godfrey struck out 16 to set a regional record as North Cumberland, N.J. defeated Barrington,10-3, in a winners' bracket game in the Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regionals last night at West Deptford, N.J.
Godfrey allowed just two hits after the first inning and finished the game retiring 14 straight batters. He struck out the last six batters he faced in the game, the final one coming on his 94th pitch of the night - one shy of Little League's pitch-count limit.
North Cumberland scored twice in the first inning on a two-run single by Tyler to jump out to an early lead. Barrington countered in the bottom half of the frame with a pair of runs off an error and an RBI single by Zach Conte.
Barrington took a 3-2 lead in the third with an RBI single by Austin Brown. But the two hits they had in that inning were to be there last for the night.
North Cumberland took advantage of a key error with two outs in the sixth. After the error on a grounder that could have been the third out of the inning, North Cumberland had five straight batters reach base, the big blow coming on a three-run double by Tyler that gave them the lead at 6-3.
Nick Panarello was Barrington's losing pitcher. Although he got a no decision for his work, Panarello allowed just five hits in 5-2/3 innings on the mound before meeting the pitch limit. He struck out five and walked three.
Barrington will face Wappinger, NY in an elimination game Tuesday at 4:30 pm.
