Point Judith's Jeff Martin had a disappointing finish today as he shot 78 in the opening round of the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills.
Martin went out with a 4-over 39 on the front side. He birdied 10 and was 3-over with three holes left. But he double-bogeyed 16 and then had a triple-bogey seven on 18.
Martin was in the second group off the tee, in a threesome with Sweden's Robert Karlsson. Karlsson, the only player in the field to be in the top 10 in each of the first three majors, led most of the morning. He got as low as 4-under and finished at 2-under 68, which ties him for the early lead with Jeev Milkha Singh.
Martin is the only Rhode Islander taking part in the final major on the PGA Tour. He qualified by finishing in the top 20 in the national Club Pro Championship last month.
The PGA uses a different formula than a normal PGA Tour event for determining which players qualify. Its system goes from August to August each year. None of the Rhode Islanders on tour, Billy Andrade, Brett Quigley, Patrick Sheehan, Brad Adamonis, nor the injured Brad Faxon, qualified.
