Brad Valois, the two-time defending champion, and David McAndrew, the medalist, led the way as young players dominated the first day of match play in the 103rd R.I. Golf Association Amateur today at Agawam Hunt.
Valois, a URI star, came back from an early two-hole deficit to beat Jonathan Pannone in the second round, 3 and 2. Earlier, he survived a big challenge from Eddie Hjerpe, 1 up.
McAndrew, the top player for Stetson this year, topped Andrew Maziarz, 4 and 3. In the second round, he needed a 20-foot birdie putt from the back fringe to edge Jonathan Pannone, 1 up.
With temperatures near 90 for the third straight day, many of the older players were beaten. They included Hall of Famers Paul Quigley and George Pirie and reigning player of the year Charlie Blanchard.
The oldest quarterfinalist is Metacomet's Darren Corrente, a 45-year-old attorney. Others moving on are college stars Matt Broome (Furman) and Garrett Medeiros (Wofford). Also, Ben Tuthill, the 2000 champion, Steve Royer, who works as a golf superintendent, and Fenner Hill's Jaon Hull. Hull had the longest day of all. He nipped Billy Auger, 1up, and then outlasted Billy Forcier in 22 holes in the second round.
Two more rounds will be played Thursday and the 36-hole final Friday.
