The buzz surrounding Darren Rizzi's hiring as football coach at the University of Rhode Island failed to pursuade his counterparts in the Colonial Athletic Association and selected media that the Rams will be much of a threat this season.

URI is picked to finish last in the CAA North Division. The University of Massachusetts is the overwhelming favorite, having received 17 of 19 first-place votes. New Hampshire finished second and Hofstra third. Each received one first-place vote. Maine Northeastern and URI round out the division.

Richmond is the favorite in the CAA South. The Spiders received 11 first-place votes. James Madison got seven first-place votes and is second. Delaware with one first-place vote is third. Villanova, William & Mary and Towson are in the bottom half of the division.

Liam Coen of Newport, the former La Salle star and the UMass quarterback, is the pre-season pick as CAA offensive player of the year and all-conference quarterback. He passed for 3,091 yards last season. URI's Joe Casey is the pre-season favorite for all-conference recognition at fullback. He is a three-time recipient of post-season honors.

The CAA is holding its annual media day today in Baltimore.
