But another Rhode Islander, Exeter's Laura Sogar (right), didn't qualify for the finals in one of her events.

Beisel, who made the Olympic team Sunday with a second-place finish in the 400-meter I.M., will be swimming in the 100 backstroke. She made the finals with a 1:00.87 performance in the semifinals. That time was the fifth-highest in the semis.

Sogar didn't qualify for the finals in the 100 breaststroke. She will also be competing in the 200 breaststroke, which will be decided on Friday.

The other Rhode Islander in the trials is Alex Forrester of Narragansett. She didn't qualify for the finals in Monday's 100 butterfly and now will shoot for a berth in the 200 butterfly finals on Thursday. She and her family moved to Rhode Island last year from Pound Ridge, N.Y., and she was the subject of a feature story in last Saturday's Journal-News.
