Warm and humid weather greeted the field today for the first round of the 2008 Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships at the Newport Casino. The sky was blue when play started at 11 a.m., but haze developed by 12:30 and fog is swirling now at 4:30 as the final match of the day in the stadium between the defending singles champion, Fabrice Santoro of France, and countryman Nicolas Mahut and Americans Mardy Fish, the top singles seed this year, and John Isner. A warm breeze has blown most of the day. Sixth-seeded Donald Young was the only seed on the schedule today. The 18-year-old rising American star just defeated Woong-Sun Jun of Korea, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. In the first match to finish, qualifier Rohan Bopanna of India upset Kevin Kim of the U.S., 6-3, 6-4. Mikhail Ledovskikh or Russia followed a short while later with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Kristian Pless of Denmark. The America veteran Vincent Spadea defeated Simon Stadler of Germany, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, and qualifier Brendan Evans of the U.S. beat Paul Capdeville of Chile, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
