The Monster on a 2,000-mile qualifier for the Volvo Ocean Race

Il Mostro – The Monster – will use the 635-mile Newport-Bermuda Race as a short training run for the Volvo Ocean Race around the world, scheduled to start in October. Newport sailor Ken Read is skipper of Puma Ocean Racing, the team sailing The Monster.

The Newport Bermuda race is scheduled to start June 20 off Castle Hill. More than 200 boats have entered.

In ideal conditions, Read said, the Puma boat could complete the race to Bermuda in just over a day. Goetz Custom Yachts built The Monster in Bristol.

The race will be carried live on iBoattrack.com. The tracking site is accessible through the race website. It shows boat positions on a periodically updated basis, course and speed over the bottom and predicted arrival time in Bermuda. The track of the yachts is superimposed over the Gulf Stream and updated wind predictions.
