| Celtics D was a No Show in first quarter »
BY KEVIN McNAMARA LOS ANGELES -- Doc Rivers wanted to get Kevin Garnett going right out of the box last night but the Lakers’ stunning 35-14 first quarter haymaker scrapped those plans. Garnett had picked up two fouls by the 6:05 mark of the opening quarter as Lamar Odom continually raced by him. Garnett left the floor at that point and sat and watched as the Lakers piled it on in the first quarter. He missed three first-quarter shots and finally got on the board in the second quarter with two straight jumpers. But those shots only brought the Celtics to within 37-19. Rivers says Garnett’s unselfish style on offense makes him a unique player. "He’s just a different big (man) than you’ve ever seen," said Rivers. "I liken him to a little bit like Patrick Ewing. Playing for the Knicks everyone complained that Patrick took too many jump shots. I used to laugh. He made most of them so why shouldn’t he take them? Kevin is a scorer. He’s capable of scoring but for the most part Kevin is going to make the right play." |
