Daily News story claims widespread off-label use of Viagra by athletes
The New York Daily News today has a story about the alleged widespread use of Viagra and imitations by athletes who the story says believe the drugs help build endurance; deliver oxygen, nutrients and performance-enhancing drugs more efficiently to muscles; and offset negative effects of steroids. The story quotes BALCO founder Victor Conte as saying that all of his clients took it, stating: "It's the biggest product in nutritional supplements."
Although he was not tied up in BALCO, Clemens is nevertheless featured in the lead of the Daily News story, which quotes an unnamed source talking about the Rocket. Meanwhile, the blog FanHouse comments on the irony that Viagra's main pitch man used to be Rafael Palmeiro, the slugger who was disgraced by a positive steroids test. Can't say whether the story is accurate, but we did get a laugh at the Daily News cover:
