Chiarelli indicates Bruins ready to make a splash through free agency
BOSTON (AP) - Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Wednesday he's is thinking of moving some high-priced contracts in order to pursue high-profile player.
Among the free agents he's considering is Marian Hossa, a highly skilled goal-scorer who helped the Pittsburgh Penguins reach the Stanley Cup finals this spring.
"It depends on how the market is going and what impact that player will have and what the demands of that player are on July 1 or just after July 1," Chiarelli said in a conference call to discuss the team's two-year contract extension with defenseman Mark Stuart.
The Bruins owe right wing Glen Murray $4.15 million and goalie Manny Fernandez $4.3 million this coming season while less-expensive players like forwards P.J. Axelsson and Phil Kessel are rumored to be on the trading block, which could also open valuable cap space.
"We do have some commitments out there, contractual commitments that put us at cap number that we can't go after a $10 million (a year) player," Chiarelli added. "In that sense, if we decided to go after a $10 million player, we'd be in trouble."
