LOS ANGELES --For a team that relied on its defense to roll to an NBA-best 66 wins, last night’s awful play came as a shock to the Celtics. As the Lakers went off for 58 first half points on 50 percent shooting, Doc Rivers went to his bench early and often in search of some defensive options.

The Lakers opened up a 35-14 first-quarter advantage thanks largely to its own 64 percent shooting. That Kobe Bryant was 0-for-2 shooting in the quarter made the onslaught even more impressive.

The Celtics slowed the Lakers a bit in the second quarter but the home team still scored 23 points with Bryant again without a field goal. Lamar Odom (15) and Pau Gasol (10) combined for 25 points. The Lakers finished the first half with six 3-pointers in 13 tries.
