Macayla Kirylo tossed her seventh no-hitter of the season, as Tolman posted a 5-2 victory over Scituate in Game One of the Division III finals of the Amica Insurance Rhode Island Interscholastic League Softball Championships, yesterday at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex at Rhode Island College.
Although Kirylo did not give up any hits, she did have some control issues, especially early on, finishing with 10 walks. Scituate capitalized on a couple of them to take a 2-0 lead.
Victoria Ramos drew a walk in the third inning, advanced to third on an overthrown pick-off attempt and scored on a wild pitch for the Spartans’ first run.
Samantha Dougherty then led off the fourth with a walk, went first-to-third on Shannon Audet’s ground-out to the pitcher and scored on Audet’s twin sister Heather’s ground-out to the mound.
But Tolman quickly responded with five runs in the bottom half of that inning, capitalizing on four Scituate errors and two walks, along with a single up the middle by Kirylo, a bunt single by Shannon Deighan and a double to left center by Brenda Parker.
Tolman and Scituate will meet for Game Two of the best-of-three series, Sunday at 2 p.m. at Rhode Island College.
