Fans arrested at Yankee Stadium say they made a 'stupid mistake'
NEW YORK (AP) - Two New York Yankees fans say they were overcome with Opening Day excitement when they tried to take home some decorative bunting from Yankee Stadium.
John Bunjaporte (BUN'-jah-port) admits Tuesday's stunt was "a stupid mistake." But he says he hopes authorities will drop the attempted larceny and criminal mischief charges against him and baseball buddy Keith O'Rourke.
Yankees chief operating officer Lonn Trost says the team is "taking the incident very seriously."
Police arrested Bunjaporte and O'Rourke after witnesses reported seeing them trying to take down the bunting following the Yankees' victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. O'Rourke says the two "love the Yankees to death" and wanted a souvenir, but then thought better of it.
The two are due in court May 19.
