STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - Travis Ford has a singular ambition as the new Oklahoma State basketball coach. "My goals are to take this Oklahoma State basketball program to a national championship," he said in a news conference Thursday. Ford agreed Wednesday to leave his job at Massachusetts to take over Sean Sutton's position at Oklahoma State. He said the reasons for taking the job include the passion of Oklahoma State's fans and the school's strong home court advantage. "I'm here to make it the best home court advantage in all of basketball," he said. Ford said he met with his new players and told them to expect to work hard. "If you don't like to work, you're probably not going to like playing for me," he said.

BOSTON (AP) - Some might call it a curse, others might call it a cure for cancer. The Boston Red Sox's official charity, the Jimmy Fund, is auctioning off the David Ortiz jersey that was buried under the New York Yankees' new stadium by a Boston fan trying to curse its American League rivals. The auction began Thursday on eBay Inc. and lasts for one week. The starting bid is $500. Construction worker Gino Castignoli had dropped the jersey in wet concrete, apparently hoping to hex the archrival Yankees. Anonymous tipsters led the Yankees to the jersey's location, and it was dug up Sunday.

HOUSTON (AP) - Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada has told the team he's actually 33, two years older than he's listed in the club's media guide and other baseball records. Tejada, saying he wanted rid himself of a burden, approached general manager Ed Wade and asked to correct misinformation he gave the Oakland A's when he signed in 1993, the Houston Chronicle reported on its Web site Thursday. Team officials were not immediately available to comment to The Associated Press. The Astros were wrapping up a three-game series Thursday with the Phillies in Philadelphia. Tejada was actually 19 when he signed out of poverty-stricken Bani, Dominican Republic. At the time, he says, a local coach encouraged him to say he was 17. "I'm a poor kid that wanted to sign," Tejada said on the Chronicle site. "I'm feeling free now. It's something that I had in my mind." The former American League MVP was signed out of the Dominican Republic by Hall of Famer Juan Marichal, but he was clear Marichal had no part in the deception. Moreover, Wade and Tejada both said the shortstop's green card, driver's license and other legal papers in the United States reflect his actual birthday, May 25, 1974. The Astros' media guide lists his birthday as May 25, 1976.

MONTREAL (AP) - Mark Streit has a hip injury and will sit out the Montreal Canadiens' playoff game against Boston on Thursday. Coach Guy Carbonneau said Streit was injured in the second period of Game 4 on Tuesday in Boston and is day to day. Michael Ryder will replace Streit. Montreal leads the best-of-7 Eastern Conference quarterfinal series 3-1 and can wrap it up with a victory Thursday. Streit splits his time playing defense and left wing and the right point on the power play. Patrice Brisebois will likely take over the point. Defenseman Francis Bouillon (ankle) and captain Saku Koivu (fractured foot) are also missing for Montreal. Neither is expected to play in the series.

Last night's was a pretty ugly game, so I guess it's appropriate that today's edition of SoxTalk is sound only, with no pictures. Sean discusses Clay Buchholz's tough night, Chien-Ming Wang's inability to follow up on Friday's excellent effort, Kevin Youkilis' injured foot and the strange scheduling decision by Major League Baseball to have the Yankees finish this season on the road. Click here to listen to Sean's comments.

On today's sports cover, Joe McDonald and Sean McAdam both write the ugly story from the Bronx, where no one wearing a Red Sox uniform could get anyone out last night. Kevin McNamara has the more upbeat story on the Celtics' regular-season finale, a meaningless win that was more about tuning up for the playoffs than anything else. And John Gillooly launches our All-States coverage with his story about the Dick Reynolds Team Sportsmanship Award winners for winter. Click here to download the file in pdf format.
The Boston Celtics will begin their playoff run on Sunday at 8:30, when they host the Atlanta Hawks for Game 1 of a first-round best-of-seven series. The game will be shown on TNT and Comcast Sports Net. Here is the rest of the schedule (note that the game times for games five through seven, if they are necessary, are yet to be announced): Game 2: Wednesday at Boston, 8 p.m. (TNT, Comcast Sports Net)
