Witness says Leyritz was distracted before fatal crash
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A man riding with Jim Leyritz the night they were involved in a fatal crash says the former World Series star got distracted just before running a traffic light.
Bruce Barger told police Leyritz reached for something or was adjusting the car radio before the crash. Court documents released Wednesday show that Barger told police he saw the light turning red.
Leyritz has pleaded not guilty to DUI manslaughter in the Dec. 28 crash that killed Fredia Veitch. He played for six major league teams and was last in the majors in 2000.
