Strawberry agrees to pay IRS back taxes, interest
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Former baseball star Darryl Strawberry will pay the IRS more than $430,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest.
A judgment was signed Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Donald M. Middlebrooks. Strawberry was convicted of tax evasion in 1995 over income from autographs and memorabilia. He is agreeing to pay the IRS for tax years 1989 and 1990.
Court papers show that Strawberry has already paid the IRS more than $8,600 of the total amount.
Court papers indicate that Strawberry represented himself in the tax case. He listed an address in St. Charles, Mo.
Strawberry was an eight-time All-Star and member of two World Series championship teams. He has also battled drug problems and cancer.
