Martin advances to finals
Warwick's Jeff Martin and Sean Kenily of Nashport, Ohio, have advanced to the finals of the 45th annual TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Match Play Championship. They will meet for the title at 8 a.m. Sunday on the Dye course at the PGA Golf Club. The winner will receive $4,500 from the $40,116 purse. The runnerup earns $3,000.
Martin, an assistant at Point Judith Country Club in Narragansett, rolled to a 4 and 2 victory over Dwayne Randall, an assistant at Sand Ridge Golf Club in Chardon, Ohio. Even through nine holes, Martin pulled away by winning the 10th, 12th and 14th holes with birdies and the 13th with par-3. Randall won the 15th before Martin closed out the match with another birdie at the short 16th.
Kenily and Martin have become good friends since meeting during the Srixon PGA Tournament Series here in December. “It’s hard to play a match against a friend,” Martin said as he waited for Kenily’s match to finish, “but I’d rather see him win than root for him to lose against Heins.” Added Kenily, “”It should be fun, a good match.” Kenily was even par for 19 holes, Martin three under through 16.
