Cheruiyot, Grigoryeva to defend Boston Marathon titles
BOSTON (AP) - Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot of Kenya and Lidiya Grigoryeva of Russia will defend their titles at the 112th Boston Marathon on April 21, race organizers said.
Cheruiyot - who also won in 2003 and 2006 - looks to become the fourth man and first Kenyan to win the marathon four or more times.
He finished last year's race in stormy weather in 2 hours, 14 minutes, 13 seconds and set a course record of 2 hours, 7 minutes, 14 seconds in 2006.
Grigoryeva won her title by holding off the top three ranked women in the world: Deena Kastor, Jelena Prokopcuka and 2006 Boston champion Rita Jeptoo. She finished in 2:29:18 in her first Boston try.
"Robert and Lidiya showed their strength by winning in difficult conditions in 2007. We look forward to seeing how they follow up on those victories in 2008," Guy Morse, executive director of the Boston Athletic Association, said in a statement.
