DIVISION I FOOTBALL: St. Raphael wins state title
EAST PROVIDENCE -- Jordan Monk set up the game-winning touchdown by returning a free kick 73 yards deep into Hendricken territory with five minutes to play in the fourth quarter as St. Raphael, playing without star quarterback Stanley Dunbar, upset the Hawks, 8-6, today at Pierce Field and won the state high school football championship.
Hendricken had a taken a 6-0 lead with 12 seconds to go in the first half on Matt Brown's 90-yard punt return.
St. Raphael was driving for the tying TD in the fourth quarter when the Hawks recovered a Saints fumble on their own 2-yard line. Unable to make a first down, they took an intentional safety, cutting their lead to 6-2, to get the free kick -- with a strong wind at their backs -- from the 20-yard line rather than having to punt from their own end zone.
But Monk returned to the free kick 73 yards to the Hendricken 2. Peter Micali scored the game-winning touchdown from there.
